Eonic Solutions and DoubleBW merge into Eonic BV

DoubleBW Systems BV Netherlands and Eonic Solutions GmbH, Ulm, Germany, today announced the merger of both companies and their technologies. The resulting company will operate under the new identity of Eonic B.V. and will be headquarted in Delft, The Netherlands.

DoubleBW's core product is its PowerFFT processor, the fastest floating-point FFT processor in the world. Capable of handling sustained data rates at over 100 Msps while typically only consuming 1 Watt and providing up to 139 dB of signal-to-noise ratio, the PowerFFT processor is the core of doubleBW's high-end front-end DSP products. Eonic's core product is the Atlas high-end scalable DSP computer based on its unique CSPA (Communicating Signal Processing Architecture). Systems start with just a single DSP or G4 processor and feature reconfigurable switch fabrics in FPGAs, allowing to build systems with several 100's of processing and I/O nodes while customizing the front-end processing and communication stream for each application in software, without the need for a hardware redesign. The combined technologies provide out-of-the box system solutions addressing the needs of various applications like high-speed laser control, vision systems, sonar, radar, 3G and 4G telecommunication systems.

Laurens Bierens, CEO of doubleBW said: "With Eonic, we found a partner that really knows about scalable systems, as well in hardware as in software. Combined with our leading-edge front-end technology we have now a modular platform that can handle the most demanding applications. Our customers can expect a solution that really fits their needs, with outstanding performance and scalability in hard- and software."

Eric Verhulst, chairman and marketing director of Eonic Solutions, said: "Atlas was developed specifically to support software driven, hardware independent system design. With it, designers can focus on the design of the product features. For high-end solutions where sustained sampling happens at RF rates, an integrated solution is needed from front- to back-end. DoubleBW's technology with its PowerFFT adds high-end processing capability in the front-end. They recognized from the beginning that data movement is the crucial operation, and, as a result, our products integrate seamlessly with no bottlenecks."

The PowerFFT based front-end products
PowerFFT-based products from doubleBW are centered around the 128 MHz PowerFFT processor (designed in 0.18 µm). Derived products include, among others, a PCI-64 board with analogue A/D front-end, a RACEWAY module and high-speed sampling boards at up to 1.5 Gsps. The whole range is supported by a comprehensive set of software libraries. The PowerFFT is programmable and has other features as well, like a data-mover and correlation functions. While a single 1 K floating Complex FFT is done in 10 µs (microseconds), the data moving unit supports high speed 2D FFT. The result is a set of solutions that address market needs high-end RF, Software Defined Radio, radar and telecommunications to 2-dimensional image processing.

The Atlas Signal Processing Computer System
Eonic's Atlas Signal Processing Computer system was developed specifically to support software driven, hardware independent system design. It features Eonic's CSPA (Communicating Signal Processing Architecture). Using CompactPCI as the form factor, Eonic's Atlas allows selecting from Analog Devices 21060 and 21160 SHARC, Texas Instruments C6202/3 and Motorola's G4 as general purpose DSP. A key component is the on-board FPGA, which provides the active communication backbone of its CSPA concept. The result is a fully scalable and flexible system solution based on open standards for I/O and build-in high reliability support. Applications cover high-speed laser control, vision systems, sonar, radar, 3G telecommunication systems.

About doubleBW Systems BV
DoubleBW Systems BV, based in Delft, was a spin-off of TNO and Delft Technical University. Its core product is the flexible PowerFFT chip, today the fastest floating-point-precision DSP in the world, with unparalleled precision and power consumption. Co-designed with IMEC and manufactured by UMC, next versions of the chip will provide sustained frequency analysis at over 200 Msps and make it the ideal component for Software Defined Radio, radar, image processing and high-end frequency based spectrum analysis.

About Eonic Solutions GmbH
Eonic Solutions GmbH, based in Ulm, Germany is the result of a restructuring of the Eonic group (ex Eonic Systems NV) in April 2001, following the acquisition of the Virtuoso RTOS technology by Wind River Systems. This move has facilitated the expansion of the Atlas DSP system solution into an open and very scalable and flexible system solution. Its CSPA architecture is unique but universal, comparable to the definition of the PC's architecture for the embedded DSP market.
